Handmade Hats & Scarves for Those in Need
KnitHope collects and distributes handknit or crocheted hats and scarves to those in need in our local Pittsburgh community. While these scarves provide needed physical warmth for our city's winters, these handmade items also send a much needed message to those who may be struggling, that people in their community care about them. One handmade item from a giving volunteer can make a big impact in a recipient's life.
Our hats and scarves are distributed each fall to homeless men and women, previously homeless women and children in recovery programs, families struggling to make ends meet, and home bound senior citizens. In the past we have worked with organizations such as North Hills Community Outreach, Light of Life Rescue Mission, and Northside Common Ministries to get the scarves out to those who need them most.
Thanks to a grant in 2010 from the Open Your Heart to a Senior initiative, we were also able to create some new programs that benefited our knitters.
